New York Times best-selling author and reality TV star, Toya Wright talks to us about her memoir In My Own Words… My REALity.
Tell us more about your memoir
In My Own Words… My REALity is about my life. I’ve been through a lot this past year, from social media pettiness to admitting my mom into a psychiatric ward. This book offers my truths without any filters. I share the struggles I experienced when my two brothers passed, the pain I felt when my marriage dissolved, the humiliation I experienced when my ex-husband [Mickey Wright] belittled me in public, and how I met my first husband [Lil] Wayne.
How is it different from your first book?
When I wrote my first book, Priceless Inspirations, I was a young girl going through growing pains. In My Own Words… My REALity shows how I’ve grown and got stronger. It’s a reflection of 33-year-old Toya.
Would you dabble into fiction?
My second book, How To Lose A Husband, was a novel. I love writing fiction because I’m able to get really creative and come up with different stories. I’m ready to write part two of How To Lose A Husband and a movie script, too!
Who is your favourite author?
Rhonda Byrne, who wrote the great self-help book The Secret(Simon & Schuster; R358). I strongly believe that there is always hope and that something good will come your way through positive thinking. We as human beings have to overcome negativity.
What’s your favourite book growing up?
Chicken Soup for the Soul by Jackhansen Canfield (Simon & Schuster; R157) and the Junie B Jones book series by Barbara Park (Random House). When my daughter was little, I would buy her the Junie B Jones books because I think they are incredible.
You’re on the road promoting
My Bally luggage set! Besides that, I always need to sleep in my Before Bed Headz Bonnet to protect my hair.
What’s your go-to outfit when you need to feel confident?
Something that accentuates my curves and makes me feel sexy, like a cute fitted dress paired with killer heels. My favourite brands are DSquared2, Giuseppe Zanotti and Christian Louboutin.
