This past week saw the fashion crowd head to the cobbled streets of Milan to soak up the latest bold, bright and beautiful designs of the spring/summer 2017 season. Here’s GLAMOUR’s look at the trends to come out of the city.
As seen at Arthur Arbesser, Atsushi Nakashima and Fay
The trend: Classic camo
Why we love it: Camouflage returns to the runways this season, which means either breaking out the camo you already own, or investing in a piece that’s sure to stay fashionable for seasons to come.
How to wear it: Conquer camouflage with a single item in muted tones paired with greens, browns or blacks. Want to stand out? Try colourful camo, but be warned: it can look tacky.
What to add: Balance out the masculine feel with strappy stilettos or gladiator sandals.
As seen at Versace, Salvatore Ferragamo and MSGM
The trend: All tied up
Why we love it: It’s practical and, thanks to the continuing athleisure wear trend, designers have embraced it as a decorative element.
How to wear it: Models at Versace rocked full-on drawstring dresses, with random rushing and pleating, but if you want something more subtle, choose a drawstring halter-neck dress.
What to add: White sneakers for that sport-luxe vibe.
As seen at Au Jour Le Jour, Antonio Marras and Arthur Arbesser
The trend: Check in
Why we love it: We associate the fabric with strong women, like Taylor Swift, Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot.
How to wear it: If gingham is too loud for you, start with a pair of shoes or an accessory, like a bag, belt or scarf.
What to add: Red lips, for that extra va-va-voom.
As seen at Prada, Luisa Beccaria and Fendi
The trend: Layer cake
Why we love it: School uniform-inspired fashion is always cute, and transports us back to the ’90s.
How to wear it: For a casual, daytime feel, layer a T-shirt under a denim pinafore. And as for the office, don a long-sleeved button-up shirt with a simple shift dress.
What to add: A choker, if you’re feeling extra nostalgic.
As seen at Emilio Pucci, Moschino and Salvatore Ferragamo
Bright yellow
The trend: Sunshiney day
Why we love it: Who wouldn’t be happy in such a sunny hue? Plus, it is definitely the colour of the season.
How to wear it: Pay attention to your skin tone: dark complexions can pull off any shade of yellow, but the lighter you are, the brighter you should go to avoid looking washed out.
What to add: Don’t think you can pull off head-to-toe yellow? Add pops of it to your look via shoes, handbags and nails.
As seen at Alberta Ferretti, Les Copains and Wunderkind
The trend: It’s a cinch!
Why we love it: A cinched-in belt instantly gives you that hourglass figure Kim Kardashian West is famous for – no uncomfortable corset required!
How to wear it: Nail two trends in one by wearing a bulky belt with an off-the-shoulder gypsy dress. Very Boho beautiful.
What to add: Not much! Since an oversized belt is a statement piece, models on the runway were styled with minimal accessories.
