Ever wondered whether it’s better to have individual photos or photos of you in a group on your dating profile? Well, dating app, Double, may have just found the answer.
The app, which allows its users to sign up in pairs and go on double dates, has found on average matches are 50% higher than traditional dating apps where people meet one on one. Why? Apparently because of the “Cheerleader effect”.
First coined by The University of California, the theory states that people are more attractive when photographed in a pair or group because the mind averages out the asymmetries and disproportionalities of all the faces to make the best of each one. Therefore, when you’re standing next to a friend, you seem more attractive to a potential suitor and they are more likely to swipe right.
This Cheerleader effect happens in both groups of men, women and mixed-gender group and can happen when just two or more people are photographed.
Double co-founder, Gary MacDonough, said “We know that our matches-to-user ratio is significantly higher than the industry average but we always attributed this to the fact that there seemed to be a lot of attractive people on the app. We then came across this study and immediately had a greater understanding of what was happening.”
