The surprising health dangers of having too much apple cider vinegar in your diet

Miranda Kerr drizzles it over her salads, people bathe in it and our favourite Instagram health gurus preach the benefits of it, but is apple cider vinegar all it’s cracked up to be?

We called on the experts to determine whether the trendy wellness vinegar is actually that good for us.

As Dominica Roszko, health expert and founder, www.vegerasta.com, explains, apple cider vinegar is a natural tonic with plenty of health benefits that are supported by scientific studies – but there can be dangers, too.

“It should only be consumed in small doses,” warns Dominica. “Too much can produce a number of negative side effects.”

Delving into the topic in more detail, Rick Hay, nutritional director of Healthista, explains, apple cider vinegar does have it benefits. “It is a good digestive system and gut tonic,” he said.

“However, it can have some downsides if over-used, which, in turn, could lead to tooth or throat problems due to the acetic acid levels. This in excess can potentially irritate the throat and adversely affect enamel.”

Rick also warns that there are also some concerns with its overuse if you have type two diabetes or are on diuretics.

“It may lower glucose levels and could affect potassium levels,” he said. “These adverse effects would only occur if you take too much as in the right dose it can be beneficial.”

Like most things, apple cider vinegar is great for you in moderation so stick to drizzling and sipping it rather than downing half a bottle on a daily basis.
