Colds and winter go together like peas in a pod, which is why most of us will experience the joys of being ill at least once over the course of the season. But if you find yourself the victim of sniffles and sore throats all winter long, it might be time to start asking why.
Are you eating healthily?
It’s natural to want to fill up on comfort food (read: junk food) when we’re sick, but if your daily diet consists of mostly saturated fat, refined sugar and sodium, you’re doing yourself more harm than good. Switch to lean protein, fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and start eating yourself healthy with every bite.
Are you hydrated?
Colder weather tends to make us want to drink less, but it’s even more important to stay hydrated in winter in order to avoid becoming sick. Dehydration can cause uncomfortable symptoms such as headaches, low blood pressure and lethargy, so make sure you drink at least 2litres a day and say “Cheers” to your health.
Are you sleeping enough?
If you’re not getting enough shut-eye, you could be getting sick as a result. Lack of sleep has been related to obesity, heart disease and diabetes, to name a few, and consistently under-sleeping could make you more prone to infections. So grab that blanket and go hit Club Duvet – doctor’s orders!
Are you washing your hands?
Germs are everywhere and can spread so easily, often with just a simple handshake. Keep yourself, and those you interact with, safe from colds and viruses by washing your hands after using the bathroom, handling food, taking out the rubbish and being near a sick person. Proper hygiene isn’t just a good habit, it’s a healthy one, too!
