Move mint with Bianca from Mint Pilates Wellness Studio: Turn your fitness regime on it's head

In todays session we will be including a few happy head standing exercises to your workout.

Okay, besides the fact that head stands are the ultimate party trick, they actually have some amazing benefits to offer. These include the strengthening of your core, engaging the transverse abdomins, obliques as well as the rectus abdominis muscles. Head stands also increase your upper body strength and stamina and can be a wonderful way to practise mindfulness and improve your focus.

If the thought of balancing on your head is a bit scary, it's okay! The preparation exercises will provide a fun and stimulating challenge that will hopefully pave the way for you to brave your first headstand. There is no need to rush, like the saying goes 'It's not about the destination but about the journey". If you have always been an eager beaver, follow the steps carefully without rushing yourself into the full version. It may take some time but it is worth the wait.

Just a note on reps and sets, use your intuition as to how long to hold each posture for. You do want to feel challenged but you wouldn't want to overwhelm yourself.

In this video we use a stability ball to assist and facilitate the movement pattern in order to perform a headstand, however you could balance your feet on something more stable at first.

Be safe and have fun. I hope that your head stands bring you lots of happiness and that you can tick it off your bucket list.
