So you’ve finally decided to take the leap and hire a personal trainer. But how do you go about finding the right one? It’s not just as simple as a quick Google search and a phone call. Or is it? Here’s what you need to know:
1 Ask around
Choosing a personal trainer is a big deal, and you need to make sure the one you eventually choose is an excellent one. It’s your time, money and health after all. So ask friends, ask on social media, and ask the trainer you’re considering for one or two references. The more you know about their reputation and their methods, the better.
2 Find the right trainer for the job
Do you need to lose weight? Build muscle? Train for a specific event? Increase your fitness levels? Or just improve your general health? Different coaches specialise in different areas, so you’ll want to make sure your goals and their expertise are aligned.
3 Ask about their credentials
Personal trainers and coaches seem to be popping up everywhere thanks to the internet. When it comes to training, safety and guidance is important, so make sure you choose one that’s a professional. Ask about their qualifications and experience.
4 Find out their methods
Will they hold your hand and support you, or will they take a more tough love approach? It’s not necessary for your trainer to be your BFF, but it is crucial that you’re able to respond positively to their coaching style. If the two of you don’t gel, you’re more likely to come up with excuses for not training, wasting time and money.
5 Don’t forget the fine print
Where are they based? How much do they charge? Do they have availability for more clients? Before you get all excited about your new trainer, first find out if you’re able to afford them, and if training with them works with both of your schedules. If it’s a no, then it’s back to the drawing board. If it’s a yes, then it’s time to lace up those trainers and get cracking!
