CA MA GU continues to elevate her sound with the release of her upcoming album, "Nqabashe"

With just 3 years in the industry, CA MA GU has solidified her place as one of South Africa’s rising DJs and producers to watch. Her journey began in 2022 at Bridges Academy, a pivotal stepping stone that has fueled her rapid ascent.

Based in Cape Town, CA MA GU has been steadily curving out her space in the music scene. With one project already to her name " HER name is CA MA GU", she returns with her second offering, "Nqabashe" set for release on April 4, 2025—a powerful fusion of her Xhosa heritage and the infectious rhythms of Amapiano. The album is more than just music; it’s a spiritual alignment, paying homage to the past while embracing the future.

GLAMOUR caught up with CA MA GU to talk about her journey, her latest project, and the inspiration behind her evolving sound.

Can you tell us a bit about your name and its significance? How does it reflect your identity or heritage?

CA MA GU "means "So be it" or "Amen", it signifies allowing my ancestors to take charge of my creative space and guide me on a greater path. I believe this is my calling.

What first drew you to DJing, and how did your journey in the industry begin?

I fell in love with DJing in 2019 while working as a news anchor at a community radio station. I would see DJs coming in to play their mixes, and I knew that was something I would love to do because of my passion for music.

What was your first-ever DJ gig like, and how did it shape your approach to performing?

It was a total mess, But the crowd was amazing. I made a lot of mistakes during my first gig, which was very embarrassing. However, I learned a lot during that stage in terms of crowd control and developing my unique style. I improved significantly after that experience.

Can you tell us about your upcoming EP , What was the inspiration behind it?

"Nqabashe" is my clan name, which we used to call my paternal grandfather. This project serves as an offering to him and those who came before him. I have been seeing him frequently in my dreams, protecting me and assuring me that everything will be okay. Even though he is no longer with us physically, I know he is proud of the path I have chosen.

Did you work with any exciting producers or artists on this album?

I’m always guided by energy when I work. I have collaborated with amazing musicians on this project, and I can't wait for the world to learn about them.

What emotions or experiences are you trying to convey through this project

I’m naturally a happy person, and I want people to feel happy and hopeful when they listen to this project.

Your stage presence is not just about music—it’s also about style. How would you describe your fashion aesthetic?

I've always been a stylish person, and it comes naturally to me. I wouldn’t say it’s a conscious decision to dress a certain way when I perform. I would describe my fashion aesthetic as urban traditional; I love to appear both ancient and futuristic, as if I come from the future.

Who are your biggest musical inspirations, and how have they influenced your sound?

I grew up listening to Miriam Makeba, Busi Mhlongo, and Thandiswa Mazwai. I try to infuse my Amapiano sound with the rhythmic indigenous sounds from their music.

How does your cultural heritage play a role in your music selection and production?

Knowing that we’ve been robbed of our culture as a black nation, I always ensure that everything I do musically represents my culture and reminds my people of our roots. It’s liberating for me and, hopefully, for them as well.

If you could describe this album in three words, what would they be

Spiritual, soulful, and Afrocentric.

What advice would you give to aspiring DJs or producers looking to break into the industry?.
