It’s being hailed as one of Louis Vuitton’s best collections since Nicolas Ghesquière became the maison’s creative director in 2013, making yesterday’s spring/summer 2017 runway presentation a highlight on this year’s fashion calendar.

Alicia Vikander, Michelle Williams and Jennifer Connelly This collection saw traditional Parisian attire with a modern, futuristic and technical twist, while maintaining the refinement clients continue to demand from Louis Vuitton. “People expect sportswear from Vuitton now,” Nicolas said backstage. “But they also want high luxury from Vuitton, always. So I was thinking, how can I fuse those?”
Models walked the runway in fluid gowns constructed of sheer netting complete with metallic embroidery and triangular panelling, while looks consisting of boardroom grey hues, tailored suits paired with knee-length skirts and an overall soft silhouette brought chic back to business. Most notably, last season’s chunky heeled boot was replaced with a pointy-toed, midi boot, elegantly suited to both the dresses and slim trousers.
Another major directional move for Louis Vuitton this season was the debut of its iPhone cases, modelled after the still-coveted Petite Malle handbag, replacing the house’s penchant for showcasing a new It-bag in every collection.
“This collection was about finding my position [at Louis Vuitton],” said Nicolas. “It’s a quieter collection, more Parisian, more sophisticated … more French.”
