Raf Simons recently announced that he will be closing the label after 27 years. On the fashion brand’s Instagram page Raf Simons stated that the spring/summer 2023 collection would be its final collection.
In the Instagram post, Simons wrote, “I lack the words to share how proud I am of all that we have achieved. I am grateful for the incredible support from my team, from my collaborators, from the press and buyers, from my friends and family, and from our devoted fans and loyal followers. Thank you all, for believing in our vision and for believing in me.”
Simons launched the brand in 1995 and is known for his minimalist silhouettes particularly slim-fitting tailoring and his early graphic collections, influenced by pop and youth cultures, which blurred luxury and streetwear. His last spring collection featured bright leggings, sheer vests, knits and prints by the late artist Philippe Vandenberg. The Belgian designer previously held roles at Jil Sander, Dior and Calvin Klein before Prada.
There has been speculation that Simons wants to focus on his co-creative director role at Prada alongside Miuccia Prada. It has been said that Simons’ contract with Prada is without end. As shocking as the announcement was, he signed off the Instagram post with ‘Forward always, Raf’ and we are guaranteed that when one door closes another one opens. We look forward to Prada’s menswear show in Milan next year but only time will tell what Raf Simons does next.
