Chloë-Leigh King: A rising star

The beauty industry has long been a pioneering and ever evolving space - one that celebrates individuality, fosters creativity, and unites a vibrant community. For years, it has served as a hub of inspiration, where fresh perspectives and unique artistry can thrive. So when Foschini introduced something bold and groundbreaking into this already flourishing realm, the response was nothing short of enthusiastic.

In 2023, the brand unveiled its GlamouRise Self-Made Artist competition, a game-changing initiative designed to spotlight emerging beauty content creators. The competition quickly gained momentum, offering a unique platform for individuals to showcase their flair, creativity, and passion, while equipping them with the resources they needed to make their mark.

Returning in 2024, the competition expanded in ways that captivated audiences around the country. This time, the stakes were even higher, and the competition was broadcast across one of the largest social media platforms, turning the competition into a reality show where viewers could follow the contestants’ journey through intense tasks and challenges. After hundreds of entries, several nerve-wracking eliminations, and a show-stopping finale, the winner was revealed at the GLAMOUR Summer Party in Waterfront . That winner was Chloë-Leigh King, a multifaceted artist who stood out not only for her technical expertise, but for her ability to perform under pressure and her unwavering dedication to her craft.

Chloë’s journey is a testament to resilience and creativity. With a background in Psychology and Gender Studies, she seamlessly merges two seemingly unrelated worlds—psychological depth and artistic expression—into her makeup artistry. As a self-taught artist, Chloë’s work reflects her vibrant personality and unique perspective, inspiring everyone who crosses her path. A proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community, Chloë finds constant strength and joy in her community, stating, “My community brings me joy and inspires me to live authentically every day.” As she steps forward with Foschini, Chloë’s beauty journey is just beginning. With each bold move, she continues to solidify her presence in the beauty industry, leaving a lasting mark while paving the way for future generations of creators.

How did you feel while putting together your entry video for GlamouRise 2024? What was on your mind during that process?

Honestly, I felt no pressure creating my entry video for GlamouRise. I approached it with the goal of just being myself and having fun. It was a mix of two of my favorite things—talking and makeup. The only challenge was putting myself out there and facing the potential for rejection, which I was prepared for. So when I found out I made it to the next round, I was absolutely thrilled! Managing my expectations helped reduce the anxiety, and I took pride in the fact that I had the courage to put myself out there.

Did you ever expect that one entry video would lead to a win?

I didn’t expect to go further than I did. Even on the day of the announcement, I hadn’t fully grasped that I could win.  With over 100 entries, I thought the odds were slim, and imposter syndrome didn’t help. However, when the Top 3 was announced, I began to entertain the possibility that it could be me, but competing alongside such talented creators, I felt it could be anyone’s win, so I remained hopeful.

What drives your content creation? Where do you find inspiration for your videos?

I create content that I would personally enjoy watching. I value authenticity and love adding an element of fun to my videos. Educational content is also important,  sharing useful information is something I strive for. I follow a lot of talented creators, locally and globally. I keep a “content inspiration” folder, seeing others be creative sparks my own creativity.

Who are the content creators that inspire you the most?

There’s so many of them. But two stand out—Nadia Jaftha and Paula Bee. They inspire me for very different reasons. Nadia motivates me to be authentic. She’s transparent in sharing the highs and lows of content creation, and I admire her focus on building community and having fun with it. Paula, on the other hand, is a beauty and fashion icon. I admire the quality of her content, and as a makeup artist, I can always learn something from her. She was the first content creator to give me valuable advice when I was starting out, and I’ll always be grateful for that.

What are some of your favorite makeup trends at the moment?

The blush blindness trend is one of my favourites, followed by the “ Unrecognizable makeup” trend. I’m over the clean girl look -  Bring back 2016 makeup. I want to see people with full glam looks. Let’s see those bold makeup beats.

What music is currently on your playlist?

I haven’t had much time to explore new music, so I’ve been revisiting some old favourites. Currently on repeat is RENAISSANCE by Beyoncé, Tyla by Tyla and ETERNAL SUNSHINE by Ariana Grande.

What advice would you give to young people hoping to break into the content creator world and collaborate with brands?

Just do it!  Don't spend so much time wondering if you're good enough. The hardest part is getting started but once you begin, you’re already halfway there. Find what excites you and go for it. Also ensure that you learn the business side of content creation because it is crucial to know. Stay intentional with your content and remember why you started. This industry isn’t easy, and you need support. Build a network of creators, collaborate, and foster connections within your community.

What does 2025 look like for you?

I’m excited to refine my content creation skills and see what brands I’ll be collaborating with. I’m especially thrilled about my ambassadorship with Foschini. The experience I’ve had with them through GlamouRise has already taught me so much, I can’t wait to see my growth as a content creator this year.
