Glamour Recommends: Local brands on our radar
Supporting local fashion brands is something Glamour is passionate about. Micro businesses are essential to our economy and are its lifeblood. We know the fashion industry as a whole has unfortunately played a significant role in the global waste crisis that effects us today. When we consciously consume we drastically reduce the negative impact and provide a future for the generations to come.
A few of the benefits connected to supporting local fashion brands is job creation. In South Africa alone the staggering number of people that are unemployed is alarming and a cause for great concern. When we buy local the money stays in the community which positively impacts our economy but it also reduces the carbon footprint associated with long supply chains and transportation, contributing to a more sustainable fashion industry. Local brands only produce a limited number of designs and will produce only what is needed. Which means no excess or surplus products that needs to be disposed of which is what we are seeking to eradicate.
With this in mind we highlight 3 local brands we have on our radar.
Superella:
This brand I came to know through my younger sister when she gushed about a pair of trousers she had recently purchased and which I subsequently borrowed to wear to an event. Produced locally, with a physical store in Joburg as well as an online store this local designer Ella Buter creates unique pieces made with 100% cotton and linen and is not bound by gender, age or size. With a loyal customer base that has spanned 15 years her love for design and manufacturing shines through and clearly resonates with them. Her design ethos is to create pieces that are multifaceted and that can be worn and styled in myriad ways. This proudly South African brand is who we need to support and champion. My fave piece is definitely the wide leg pants with elasticated waist band.
N3YH:
Glamour is no stranger to this brand - N3YH specialises in sleepwear and active wear with their pieces made with bamboo fabric which offers unmatched softness, breathability and comfortability. Their latest collection offers a new range of sleepwear options in an exciting new colour way in a range of soft cami sets, elegant nightdresses, and comfortable pyjama shorts sets. The latest offering is the fifth and final print in its celebrated Dreamscape collection, a range inspired by South Africa’s natural wonders.
