Luxury fashion brands are moving away from only showing their collections at New York, London, Milan and Paris Fashion Week.
Dior’s latest pre-fall 2023 menswear collection showcased in front of the Pyramids of Giza in Cairo, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. A first for Dior, Egypt’s ancient pyramids added to the grandeur of the show.
While creative director Kim Jones nodded to the legacy of Christian Dior, he was mostly inspired by Egypt’s astrology and history. Jones featured chiffon scarves, futuristic space prints and boots, suiting, knitwear and utilitarian jackets with buckle belts, merging ancient and modern with greys, bright yellow and orange. Dior sourced local Egyptian cotton fabrics for the collection. There were 75 looks to mark the 75th anniversary of Dior.
“My interest in ancient Egypt is about the stars and the sky. It’s that fascination with the ancient world and the parallels with what we look at today; what we inherited from them and what we are still learning from the past,” Kim Jones wrote in the show notes.
Many Egyptian celebrities attended the show, such as Aya and Mounaz Abdel Rouf, as well as Naomi Campbell, Lewis Hamilton, Robert Pattinson and Suki Waterhouse.
The Grand Egyptian Museum will showcase Dior’s capsule collection in 2023 guest designed by Denim Tears founder and Supreme creative director Tremaine Emory. Dior recently announced that they will open a store in Egypt in 2024.
