Flagrant extravagance is the name of the game at the Cannes Film Festival. If you’re an actor walking the red carpet along La Croisette, the city’s famous beachside promenade, you need jewels that sparkle just as much as the Mediterranean that stretches out behind you. Take Julia Roberts, who is Godmother of the Trophée Chopard prize at this year's festival. She attended the Armageddon Time premiere wearing a Chopard necklace that centred on a giant 100 carat-plus yellow diamond as dazzling as her legendary smile. The star of the film, Anne Hathaway, gave Roberts a run for her money in a stunning sapphire necklace from Eden, Bulgari’s as-yet unreleased new high jewellery collection.
Indian jewellers know a thing or two about creating a jewellery moment and Sabyasachi did exactly that with Deepika Padukone, one of this year’s festival jurors. She wore cascading, multi-gem chandelier earrings by the designer with a matching headband that was an art nouveau twist on a matha patti, the traditional headpiece worn by Indian brides.
The jewels I loved the most, though, were those worn by Rebecca Hall at the opening ceremony. Another of this year’s jurors, she stepped out in striking colourless crystal drop earrings, the perfect balance to her full-colour Gucci gown. And who provided Hall with those perfect accessories? We have it on good authority that they belong to her mum.
So, whether you’d raid your mum’s jewellery box or opt for priceless diamonds from some of the world’s top luxury houses for your own moment on the Cannes red carpet, keep reading to discover my pick of the most dazzling jewels at the festival.
