We’ve all grown up with the old wives’ tales of ‘if you eat your carrots, you’ll improve your vision’, right? Well, that’s not the only thing they’ll improve! The food you eat affects your hair, too. We asked Ria Gyapersad from Glampalm South Africa for her top tips on eating your way to healthier hair.
Plump up your hair with protein
Did you know that protein is the most important ingredient to adorning healthy locks? “Your hair is made up, mostly, of protein so by cutting protein out of your diet, your hair will suffer the effects,” explains Ria. Protein can be found in most meats, such as salmon, steak, eggs, chicken and even beans. Add these foods to your daily diet and your hair is bound to be healthy.
Skip those spices
Do you suffer from oily hair? Do you have quite the taste for spicy foods? Unfortunately, these two are directly linked. Although natural oils are prevalent amongst all hair types, people who consume a large amount of spicy foods and spices tend to suffer from oily hair more often. “Yes, it’s true. Foods that cause your skin to sweat, in turn, cause your scalp to sweat – resulting in oilier hair,” says Ria.
Add shine to your hair
“Our diets have a large impact on the colour and shine of our hair. By not eating the correct foods, hair can start to appear dull and lifeless,” says Ria. Add a bit of manganese to your diet in order to ensure that you leave the house with luscious, shiny and envy-worthy locks. Manganese, which helps the production of hair pigmentation, can be found in foods like cinnamon and hemp seeds. “Although many shampoos and conditioners claim to provide the desired effects, healthy hair comes from the root (excuse the pun).”
By being healthy from within, you will look healthy on the outside.
