"Stress directly affects your skin by increasing inflammation and slowing down healing." As the founder of a skin health brand Complete by Dr SCS, Dr SCS explains the science behind these changes and provides evidence-based advice for skin health at every age.
How Hormones Affect Your Skin
"Hormones affect both the surface and deeper layers of your skin," explains Dr SCS. "To improve skin health, we need to consider both skincare products and internal factors like diet and stress."
Several key hormones play crucial roles in skin health. Oestrogen helps maintain collagen production and skin hydration, while cortisol, often called the stress hormone, affects skin barrier function and healing processes. Androgens influence sebum production, and thyroid hormones impact skin thickness and repair.
Teenage Years
During puberty, androgen hormones increase significantly, leading to more active oil glands. "During the teenage years, skin goes through many changes at once," explains Dr SCS. "Oil production increases, bacteria levels change, and the skin becomes more sensitive."
For effective skincare during these years, focus on gentle cleansers with salicylic acid (up to 2%). Daily application of non-comedogenic sunscreen provides essential protection, while products containing niacinamide can help manage oil production and inflammation.
"Foods that support hormone balance can help manage teenage skin," advises Dr SCS. A balanced diet should include zinc-rich foods like pumpkin seeds and lean meats to help regulate oil production. Foods rich in vitamin A, such as sweet potatoes and dark leafy greens, support healthy skin cell turnover. It's advisable to reduce consumption of sugary foods and drinks, which can affect hormone balance.
Monthly Hormone Changes
Your hormones follow a monthly pattern that affects your skin. Week 1-2 shows higher oestrogen, supporting moisture and clarity. Weeks 3-4 see increased
progesterone, which might increase oil production. "Skin changes throughout the month are normal and predictable," says Dr SCS. "Understanding these patterns helps you adjust your skincare routine effectively."
Scientific research highlights several ingredients that can help manage these cyclical changes. Azelaic acid and salicylic acid work effectively to maintain clear skin, while ingredients like niacinamide and zinc help balance oil production. Probiotics, both applied topically and taken as supplements, can support the skin's natural balance.
During the first half of your cycle, focus on sun protection and hydration. The second half may require additional products to help control oil production.
"Your skin needs different nutritional support throughout your cycle," explains Dr SCS. Early in your cycle, emphasize antioxidant-rich foods like berries and leafy greens. Later, include omega-3 rich foods such as oily fish and flaxseeds to help manage inflammation. Green tea can help balance hormone effects on skin throughout your cycle.
Menopause and Skin Changes
"During menopause, skin becomes thinner and drier because of changing hormone levels," explains Dr SCS. "This happens because oestrogen levels decrease, affecting collagen production and moisture retention."
The reduction in oestrogen leads to noticeable changes in skin thickness, natural moisture levels, healing capacity, and the appearance of wrinkles.
Effective skincare during this time should include moisturisers with ceramides and daily broad-spectrum sunscreen application. Products containing peptides can provide additional support for ageing skin.
"Diet becomes even more important during menopause," Dr SCS emphasises. "Foods that support collagen production and skin hydration can help manage these changes."
A supportive diet should include adequate protein for collagen production, healthy fats from sources like avocados and nuts, and plenty of vitamin C-rich foods to support collagen synthesis. Some people may benefit from phytoestrogen-containing foods like soy products, though this should be discussed with healthcare providers.
