Millions of women are living with common skin conditions that impact their lives… and one of the major ones that knocks our confidence: stretch marks. If red and white streaks have left their mark on your skin, here’s how you can improve their appearance.
1 Treat them early
Stretch marks start off red and become white over time, so the trick is to target each line while it’s still fresh. And avoid yo-yo dieting, as constant fluctuations in weight can put extra strain on the skin’s elastin.
2 Maximise moisture
Lotions and oils help your cells retain water, which plumps up the skin. Apply moisturiser to damp skin just after you shower to help top up your lipid layer. By keeping skin hydrated, you can improve the look of stretch marks and can minimise (but not necessarily prevent) more marks from developing.
3 Rely on retinol
A retinoid can improve the appearance of new stretch marks by boosting collagen and elastin production in the cells. If you can’t get hold of a prescription retinoid cream, opt for a tissue oil that’s rich in vitamin E, to help restore the skin’s elasticity.
4 Step under the laser
Certain specialised treatments – such as 3D Stretch Mark (from R1 000 per session), which combines laser therapy, needling and massage – can help increase and remodel the collagen in stretch marks and decrease surface redness.
