While October may be recognized as breast cancer awareness month, there are tireless organizations dedicated to spreading awareness, supporting research, and advocating for those affected by breast cancer every day of the year.
These committed groups recognize that breast cancer doesn't stop at the end of October, and neither should our efforts to combat it. Through education, fundraising, and community engagement, they strive to increase early detection and diagnosis, improve treatment options and outcomes and,provide emotional support and resources for patients and families
Here are some notable South African organizations leading the fight against breast cancer:
Pink Drive
PinkDrive was founded in 2009 by Ms. Noelene Kotschan, on the premise that “Early detection will help prolong a life.” PinkDrive’s cardinal purpose is to contribute meaningfully towards preventing as many people as it can, from succumbing to breast, cervical, prostate and testicular cancer. It’s primary focus is on citizens without access to reasonable care for these conditions, and who reside in areas where health services do not reach.
Breast Health Foundation
The Breast Health Foundation aims to put to rest myths surrounding breast cancer and to provide an open forum where women fee free. The organisation was established in 2002, Since it’s inception, the BHF has developed into a transparent and effective organisation. They educate the public on breast cancer and breast health, increase awareness and empower women.
Cancer Association of South Africa
A leader in the fight against cancer in SA, since 1931 Cancer Association of South Africa has been an instrumental organisation for many decades, their unwavering support for cancer survivors has reached many people. CANSA is a leading role-player in cancer research.Their advocacy team performs an important role, striving to influence South African policy makers with regards to important cancer control issues, to create public awareness of known cancer-causing factors, and also to give those affected by cancer a voice, protecting their right to healthcare.
Project Flamingo
Founded by Dr Liana Roodt, Project Flamingo was inspired by the heart-breaking and often chaotic journey of breast cancer patients in the public health sector; Liana Roodt decided that something needed to be done. With likeminded people, they began changing the trajectory of patient’s journey with cancer. Each of their surgical patients receives a pamper pack filled with feminine essentials and thoughtful extras as a token of compassionate support.
In addition, every week a panel of expert clinicians, including surgeons, oncologists, pathologists, and radiologists meets at the Groote Schuur Breast Clinic with approximately 20 newly diagnosed breast cancer patients to discuss their diagnosis and treatment plan. Flamingo’s ensures breast cancer patients do not go down this journey along they hold their all the way through.
