Ever since she announced the musical adaptation of The Color Purple, Oprah has been serving purple galore. But it looks like NAACP Image awards were her last event wearing purple.
In 1985 Oprah appeared in the first movie adaptation of The Color Purple. Produced by Steven Spielberg, she played the role of Sofia a fierce black woman challenging traditional female roles, and stands for what she believes in. This was Oprah’s breakthrough in film and received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.
Published in 1982 - The Color Purple was written by American novelist Alice Walker. The book breaks down the power of female relationships as they navigate abuse in a patriarchal society. Oprah’s first encounter with this classic is something she has always been vocal about throughout her career “From the very first time I read The Color Purple It was a blessing in my life – Because there was a language for what had happened to me” - Oprah Winfrey.
The recreation of The Color Purple became Oprah’s personal project, she was deeply invested and saw the movie from start to finish. The musical was released on the 25th of December which saw the beginning of Oprah’s purple reign. Marketing stunt or not she has given us some of the most amazing Purple looks.
The Color Purple ended their award season by scooping 11 awards at NAACP Image awards over the weekend. Oprah announced on IG that she will be closing the purple chapter and the only time we’ll see her in purple will be in her pyjamas. As we bid farewell to the purple wardrobe, We take back at our favourite Purple Moments.
