The popular wax bar, WAXIT recently opened their first Cape Town flagship store, and we paid them a visit. If you’ve been considering having hair stripped from your body, this could be a sign.
Getting a wax is quite an intimate experience so you can only imagine how I felt when I arrived at the WAXIT bar in Table Bay. This, after much deliberation with self…
I’m at a point in my life where I’m open to trying different things and seemingly on this Thursday morning, waxing is one of them. As a teenager, I used shaving cream but my skin would react so I figured, I’d just use a razor. Quick and easy right? (minus the random painful cuts). I became aware of waxing in varsity when one of my peers would mention that they went for a Brazilian. Huh? The reaction from the group would be giggles and high fives, which was always confusing to me. So I started Googling and to my horror, it’s not at all what I expected. Honestly, I don’t even know what I was expecting.
I’m chuckling as I browse the pamphlet when I finally arrive at the wax bar. With the formalities out of the way, Nolundi, the friendly beauty therapist politely asks which treatments I’d like. To which I smile…it’s my first time, I say, so maybe let’s just do the face today. “Are you sure?” she asks, “You could also try the legs…” and jokingly suggests the Hollywood. I browse the pamphlet again to make sure I heard her correctly, There’s just no way! Before I know it, I’m on the warm bed, the ambience is great and the conversation is flowing.
My face already feels smoother after having my brows, lip, chin and cheeks done. So I ask her to move to my legs, it’s starting to feel like a massage until she starts waxing the back of my legs. Ouch! I exclaim but it’s the kind of pain that doesn’t linger so I find comfort in this. And this gives me the courage to tell her I’m happy to try the Hollywood. “You’re brave!” she says. I laugh it off until it gets real again. I enjoy the warm liquid on my skin but the room temperature changes every time she peels it off.
At this moment, I’m wondering what I agreed to, I’m almost tempted to ask her to stop. “Take a deep breath and exhale,” she says. I practice deep breathing as I try with every fiber of my being to keep calm. Also, Nolundi’s laid-back demeanor makes it easy to look past the awkwardness, and it’s honestly not as painful as I thought it would be.
We continue chatting again like old friends with a few glitches as I take a moment to acknowledge the pain. I keep looking at my skin and besides the fresh feeling; I can already see a difference. “Do you think you’ll come back again?” she asks inquisitively, oh absolutely! It’s an easy yes because I see how this could be part of my self-care routine. It also helps that at the beginning of the session, she mentioned that unlike shaving, the hair takes a while to grow back. So I’ll be seeing this awesome beauty therapist in six weeks. I look forward to our next girl chat, I mean, session.
So if you’ve been wondering if you should wax it or not, I say do it! It wouldn’t hurt to try or would it?
