To many, Elsies River may be synonymous with gangsterism, drugs and poverty, but for Craig Lucas, this corner of the Cape Flats streets is home. He is a graduate in Economics and Politics at UCT, but despite a promising career ahead of him in the corporate world, Craig has always secretly loved singing and ended up taking home the winning title of The Voice2017. What would you say is your best attribute, and why?
I’m a total softie. I’m very empathetic, understanding and forgiving. I like peace, so I avoid any kind of conflict, which is why everyone around me tends to be happy most of the time.
Who or what inspires you?
People who are brave, and people who are ok with being different. I feel like the world puts so much pressure on us to be a certain way, and so many of us end up fighting ourselves and who we really are. Every now and again you come across someone who is unapologetically weird or different, yet so free, and that freedom inspires me in a world where we give up many of our freedoms for conformity.
I’m also inspired by people who remain good and kind in the face of adversity. My mom is one of those people. She took care of my brother and me alone, often working multiple jobs, while having gone through unimaginable hardships, yet she came out strong and didn’t let the world make her bitter or angry. She is the kindest, most loving person you’ll ever meet, and she inspires me daily to try and be a better person.
What’s your idea of a perfect date?
I don’t care for fancy things or places. I’m also not very good at small talk. The perfect date would be intimate, and romantic. There would be lots of talking and laughing, and the conversation would be deep. I love the outdoors, so it would have to be outside, and with all our favourite food, whether under the stars, on a boat, or on top of a mountain.
What’s your favourite drink?
Jagermeister or orange juice.
What fills the spot at the top of your dream destination list?
London. I love the cold and I love winter, and the winters there look amazing. I’m also deeply in love with the music there – many of my favourite artists are from the UK, like Emeli Sandé and Florence and the Machine. There’s something cool about the music that comes from there and I know that going to London would inspire me.
Do you have any regrets when it comes to past relationships?
None. I’ve left all my past relationships on good terms. I left always having learned something about myself or relationships; lessons that I still carry with me. I’ve got some amazing memories that I’ll cherish forever.
Who is your style icon?
I’m not very stylish or good with fashion. I’m hoping to change that in the new year, but I have no idea where or how to start! I don’t think I have a style icon per se, but I think Zayn Malik is pretty cool in that regard.
Who is your WCW (Woman Crush Wednesday)?
Without a doubt, it has to be my mom!
