Try to plan 6 months to 1 year in advance. Two things are important mainly in shopping for a wedding dress, your budget and your style. Decide on a budget first, then get looking. You may have looked up all kinds of styles in magazines and on the Internet, but you need to fit in a few dresses to actually see the shape and style that suits you better. If your dress has to be ordered it usually takes up to 3 months to get; a bride thus should have enough time for all contingencies.
Know where to go
Try looking for bridal stores that may have your desires size and style within your budget first. It is a dangerous thing to fall in love with a dress that is way out of your budget.
Bring the essentials
Bring pictures of styles that you are looking for, the appropriate under garments for your fitting and shoes that have the same heel height as your wedding shoes.
Know what to expect
Expect to be wowed by some dresses and styles you may not have considered in your googling process. Except to maybe not look so good in a dress you saw in a magazine of on Facebook. Expect to fall in love, even at first sight in some instances. Be ready to say “YES” when you fall in love with a dress.
Pick your entourage wisely
You need people who will be honest on your look, and will support your decision. You do not need people who are there to try make you look a certain way and not what you have envisioned yourself in. Try to keep the group very small, i.e. 4-5 people maximum.
Embrace the experience
The key thing is to have open mind, try different styles. Equally important, do not try on too many dresses, you may end up unable to make a decision. Once you find the one, stop looking. Finding your dress is like finding your man, when you have found the one, you stop looking.
