Every girl deserves an intimate space where she can rest and get dressed. Not sure your bedroom fits the bill? We spoke with Lida Vermeulen of LV Interior Design & Decorating for some insight into the trends that can turn your bedroom into a boudoir for sheer bedded bliss.
GLAMOUR: What inspired you to become a designer?
Lida: Seeing Gaudi’s magnificent Sagrada Família in Barcelona ignited my passion for design. I literally had tears in my eyes as I walked through the huge double-volume doors covered completely in intricate handcrafted leaves, ladybirds, grasshoppers and tiny bees. I immediately signed up at BHC School of Design and spent three blissful years there. I established my business last year with the aim of evoking the same ‘wow’ response in my clients that I had the day I entered that Spanish church.
GLAMOUR: So, tell us about your intended execution of your ‘Beautiful Boudoir’ at Decorex Cape Town.
Lida: My bedroom will probably be best described as a feminine, bohemian and nature-inspired sanctuary. I’m taking my design cue from the forest, which, to me, represents a sacred, pure and dreamy place. Flowers will then be the main visual element of my design – I really do believe that flowers have a language all of their own and can speak of everything from innocence to joy. And, the vocal point of my scheme will be my grandmother’s wedding dress, which has a beautiful, sensual, feminine design.
GLAMOUR: What are some of the key bedroom-decorating trends for 2015.
Lida: For starters, we’re seeing an increasing gravitation towards light colours in the bedroom, which create an open, airy feel. Classic four-poster beds are enjoying a revival and bring a real sense of romance into the bedroom – the four pillars also evoke the illusion of privacy and sanctuary. Finally, all bedrooms need a large, ultra-comfy chair in which to relax and enjoy one’s personal space.
GLAMOUR: And in terms of bedroom lighting? Anything interesting happening in that area?
Lida: On the lighting side, statement lamps are all the rage. They’ve had their day in the dining room and are now moving into the bedroom. Hexagonal shapes – in fact most geometric shapes – shine in lighting are also heavily prevalent on upholstery.
GLAMOUR: Are there any trends that you see sticking around for a while?
Lida: There’s wood; a perennially popular element that I don’t see ever going out of fashion. The lighter shades of timber, such as driftwood, are currently popular and lend a calmness to the bedroom.
