Head to Rome for romance!

Anyone with a pair of eyes knows that Rome is one the most beautiful cities in the world. So it comes as no surprise that every year millions of tourists come from around the world to admire the treasures and masterpieces of Roman art and architecture. But a trip to the Eternal City can be eternally confusing for first-timers. These tips will make it easier to travel smart and help you enjoy the city in all its glory.

What to do

- Stroll hand in hand in the Villa Borghese gardens, Rome’s third largest park. Think tall pine trees, a boating lake, hidden fountains and a replica of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.

- For the best view of the city, head to the top of the Spanish Steps and enjoy a coffee at a nearby café. Then, at the foot of the steps, you’ll find the best ode to romance at the Keats-Shelley Memorial House at Piazza di Spagna. Here you’ll find manuscripts and memorabilia of English poet John Keats, who died in Rome at a tragically young age while pining for his love back home.

- Visit the Castel Sant’Angelo, on the banks of the Tiber, where you’ll find depictions of Cupid and Psyche in the private apartments of Pope Paul III of the 16th century.

- You can’t avoid Rome’s most historic symbol: The Colosseum is a must-see for its brutal history (which will captivate your partner) and its impressive structure.

TIP How to stretch your Rands

Let’s face it, the exchange rate is not in our favour, and Rome can be expensive. Here are simple ways to enjoy it within your budget:

Go out of season

Not only do you avoid the masses, travelling out of season means that all the costs are much cheaper.

Travel by train

The train system in Italy is affordable and easy to use. Clean, efficient and regular, you can travel between cities with ease. Simply book online – most websites and ticket machines have an English language option. Within the city, the metro system is quick. Buy single journeys or a bundle of four trips to make it more cost-effective.

Where to stay

Get the A-list experience at Parco dei Principi Grand Hotel and Spa. It’s where stars like Penélope Cruz and Shakira rest their heads in this historic city. Overlooking the Villa Borghese gardens, with the dome of St Peter’s Basilica in the distance, this hotel is an oasis in the bustle of the city. Just a short stroll through the magical gardens and you’ll find yourself close to Rome’s historical sights and cultural hotspots. Decorated in a classical Baroque style, expect opulent details, gold stucco work and rich fabrics.

After a long day of exploring, the absolute highlight of the venue is the indoor pool at the on-site spa, which is open until 10 pm. Ease tired muscles in hydromassage tubs while staring at the star-studded ceiling.
