1 Rock climbing in the Cederberg
Looking for some exhilarating, outdoor adventure? Then the Cederberg mountains are where you need to be this winter! The mountain range is renowned for some of the best rock climbing South Africa has to offer. Due to the extreme heat in summer, this is an activity best experienced during winter.

2 Whale watching in Hermanus
If you love the ocean and marine animals, then Hermanus is the place for you. The fishing town is South Africa’s prime spot for watching the southern right whales’ migration to the Southern Cape. You can only witness this wonderful sight during the winter months, so be sure to go between June and September.

This rural part of the Eastern Cape is celebrated for its breathtaking scenery and untouched beaches. While beautiful all year round, if you want to take in the exquisite view sans crowds and summer rain, visiting in winter is the way to go.

4 Winter wonderlands in Barkly East
If you’re looking for snow in South Africa, the inland towns of the Eastern Cape are where you’ll find it. And just outside the town of Barkly East, there’s enough snow to ski! 6 Sardine run in KwaZulu-Natal
Between May and July every year, millions of sardines travel from Cape Point up the coastline of KwaZulu-Natal. The entire coastline sparkles silver, and the shoal is so immense, it’s visible from satellite! A multitude of marine wildlife like birds, sharks, dolphins and whales arrive to feast on the sardines, making this a spectacular show.
