If you haven’t heard of Hrush Achemyan yet, you’ve probably heard of her famous clients. She’s the makeup artist and beauty influencer who works with Kim Kardashian West, Kylie and Kendall Jenner and Leona Lewis to mention a few. We caught up with her to bring you the inside scoop on what it takes to become a pro artist in the beauty industry.
DO identify your strengths
I learnt how to oil paint at a young age – it was my escape from reality. Oil painting then transitioned into makeup application at the age of 17, when I was interning for an atelier in Los Angeles. I thought that I was meant to have lived out my dreams as a fashion designer – until the designer pointed out that I paid more attention to the details of the face when sketching than the clothing. He volunteered me to do the makeup for one of his client’s wedding day. My hand shook the whole time, and I cried after, but it turned out beautifully and the bride was thrilled. I loved that I used my craft to empower her with confidence on the most important day of her life.
DO use social media
Social media gave me the platform to excel as both a celebrity makeup artist and influencer. We live in a world where Photoshop and Facetune are prominent, so I started displaying my work in video format to show the world that makeup can act as an alternative. Then Kim Kardashian West reached out to me after seeing my work on social media.
DO make the commitment
Pour your heart and soul into anything that you wish to succeed. You never know who is watching! Be bold, different and never give up on your dreams, no matter what.
DO be patient
Stay dedicated to your craft and love what you do. It takes hard work to continue to grow and succeed. I worked day and night for 12 years to build the brand I have.
DO invest in yourself
In order to be able to be your best self, you need to have stamina. Drink fluids and exercise regularly to stay healthy.
DO work hard
A huge misconception is that this industry is glamourous. In reality, blood, sweat and tears go into maintaining your position. You have to love this with all your heart to be able to give it your all.
DO believe in yourself
My mother always drilled it in me that you get what you want if you work for it. I came from nothing and created my empire. Doubt is your enemy.
DO stay original
It’s a competitive field so you need to keep evolving. If you stick to one style or technique you’re not likely to progress. There is always room for improvement.
DON’T take no for an answer
Kris Jenner is amazing. I’m so inspired by her business mind and work ethic. She’s taught me to you never accept no as an answer!
