Pair one of the world’s leading champagne houses, Veuve Clicquot, with a sport associated with royalty, and you get a luxurious polo affair as sought-after by socialites, fashionistas and celebrities as it is by champagne connoisseurs and equestrian lovers. One of the most prestigious events on the global social calendar, it’s no surprise that when it comes to dressing for this illustrious occasion, attendees pull out all the stops. This year’s Veuve Clicquot Masters Polo 2017 theme is ‘resort’, and we’ve enlisted the help of GLAMOUR’s Most GLAMOUROUS 2016 winner, Nomzamo Mbatha, in providing all the style and etiquette tips we could possibly need. Having won best-dressed female last year and playing host at this year’s event at Val de Vie Estate, she knows first-hand just what it takes to dress for success.
The theme for this year is ‘resort’ – what are your outfit recommendations?
Many people go into a mild panic when the theme ‘resort’ or ‘cruise’ is mentioned. They grapple with particulars, wondering whether to go formal or keep it casual. I view it as simply visiting a country club where I stand to mingle with royalty. Keep your dress or skirt classy and knee-length and go for a crew or boat neckline and wide straps on the top. Be very relaxed in your outfit of choice, and stay away from anything too tight or too short, as you don’t want to spend the day fiddling. My shoe of choice is a wedge heel, as I never want to miss out on the fun and interactive ‘stomping of the divots’.
What’s your key style tip?
I joke around about my best-dressed look from 2016 being a last-minute one. I know for a fact that the attraction to it was the simplicity with which I styled it: gold-heeled mules, stud earrings and a half-updo. A statement dress never requires much accessorising – keep it simple, classy and elegant.
What are the common mistakes people make when dressing for a polo event?
Since my appointment as this year’s host, people have been asking me about the theme, and I sense they really don’t know that there’s a huge difference between nautical and resort wear. People tend to confuse the two and dress up all sailor girl or boy. There are definitely no floppy hats here! And then, of course, there are the heels. Ladies, this is the one time you are allowed to come in your flats to enjoy the full experience! I, of course, always have two pairs of shoes at the ready.
What are the DOs and DON’Ts of polo etiquette?
This is a sport synonymous with luxury, but it’s also a sport for everyone. Firstly make sure you’re acquainted with the rules of the game, so that you can enjoy easy, flowing conversation with the other attendees. The most important item to bring for the day is your enthusiasm. You can cheer as loudly as you want, just be respectful and mindful of others. And don’t forget the binoculars – there’s lots of action to catch through those lenses!
Can you give us a hint about what you’ll be wearing?
I have three spectacular garments from Jacques LaGrange and Rich Factory for the day, so keep an eye out for me…
