Moroccan unisex label Marrakshi Life just introduced their Collection 08, an exploration of the sensation of change through an interplay of different weaving techniques and an alchemy of colour – a study in dégradé, and we are going Gaga over it. The collection was designed with an optimistic eye towards spring 2021 on the back of seemingly endless lockdowns worldwide, and is a celebration of the bold use of color and stripes for which Marrakshi Life has become known.
This season, Marrakshi Life Creative Director, Randall Bachner, takes the wearer on a sartorial journey of transformation through the use of supple textures, alternate weaving processes and cascading, optical stripes. Garments featuring colour blocked lines atop hand-woven textiles are expertly tailored to create a sense of emanating from within, invoking an ethereal nature to the garment. Others reflect lightness and casual ease, with tones reminiscent of azure skies and pastel pink sunsets juxtaposed with airy ivories, billowing away from the body.
"We designed this collection while in lockdown here in Marrakech and wanted to forecast a very optimistic spring and summer for 2021," says Bachner about the latest offering. "After coming off a seemingly endless lockdown here in Marrakech, I wanted to celebrate once again through the use of colours and stripes, which are signature to the Marrakshi Life aesthetic. I reverted back to our classic pink hues this season, but wanted to explore more shades of it while expanding the widths of our stripes. In contrast, we chose to play with all of our shades of blue as we dreamed all summer to escape to the sea, and only hope to be able to do so this coming summer with more ease. I feel there is a sense freedom in this collection, more so than ever before as it’s something none of us will likely ever take for granted in the future."
Marrakshi Life’s Collection 08 applies playful twists to their best-selling silhouettes. Notable details include the addition of elongated French cuffs to signature tunic shapes, bold slits on palazzo pants to create a slouchy silhouette, and an evolution of the cropped short, which is now constructed with a button closure, zip fly and abbreviated hemline. All of these subtle additions enhance the sensuality of each piece, with some popular shapes like the Touareg dress re-imagined entirely for the season, now featuring a slimmed-down shape and cut with a plunging button-down neckline to loosen up the structure of the garment.
New standout styles for the season include the Pussy Bow Blouse – while still gender agnostic, the blouse is Marrakshi Life’s most feminine garment to date. New additions also include an interpretation of a Swedish Army jacket, a floor-length column skirt that can be styled on any gender, and camp collar shirts that meld seamlessly with the brand’s timelessly relaxed aesthetic. Known for a meticulous in-house production process, this season sees the signature Marrakshi craftsmanship extended to the smallest of details – from the drawstrings on shorts to the braided rope inside parka hoods, every detail is handcrafted at the atelier alongside each full garment.
