You wouldn’t need to see Cathryn Wills’ resume to know that she’s in the business of style. That fact is instantly apparent in every aspect of her appearance, from the magnificent embroidered kimono she wears over classic black separates to the curls that frame her heart-shaped face.
The managing and creative director of the iconic Australian MIMCO brand began her career at Country Road, followed by a stint as a freelance knitwear designer, before she joined Mimco in 2004. She soon rose up the ranks and under her leadership, MIMCO has become ever more inventive, desirable and spectacular, with offerings that include costume and fine jewellery, shoes, handbags and watches. Needless to say, we were thrilled to sit down with Cathryn to talk fashion, fashion, fashion.
Here then, are her must-haves for the new season…
Mimco R1 299 1 Gladiator sandals
These are perfect for summer’s Boho trend – try them with a flowing paisley-print dress that’s a little transparent. Alternatively, play with the Roman soldier vibe by pairing Gladiators with tailored shorts.
Mimco R350 2 A wide-brimmed fedora
Great with a sleeveless, tailored jacket, masculine trousers and flat sandals or brogues.
Mimco R2 299 3 A saddle-bag
A cross-body bag looks great and it’s practical and secure. One of my favourites is the fantastically versatile one with removable fringing (a major trend) and a chain closure (which is a MIMCO signature). It can also be worn on a long or short shoulder strap. Look for a saddle-bag in black, neutral or animal print (which I count as a neutral!), check that the lining is durable and buy something that will give you tactile pleasure, such as embossing or laser cuts. You want four bags in your wardrobe: a saddlebag, an evening clutch, a big tote that takes a laptop and a small hip bag.
Mimco R999 4 Aviator sunglasses
A classic and they make women look strong and powerful!
For a fashionable and self-expressive look, wear a mixture of rings on different fingers, especially cameos and signet rings, which pick up on the big Victoriana trend.
I love femininity, but it needs a masculine touch. Look for a nostalgic-style watch with a modern edge.
Mimco R399 7 A mix of earrings
Layering your rings, necklaces or bracelets is very much part of the MIMCO aesthetic and it’s also wonderful for earrings. Mix what you have – for example, one large earring and a collection of small ones on the other ear. Teardrops and large chandeliers are fantastic for events and ear cuffs are great, especially if you don’t want multiple piercings. Other trends to look out for: 80s-style thread earrings, pearls and fine hoops.
Mimco R699 8 A fine necklace
Fine chains are a big trend, and November will see the arrival of MIMCO Precious into stores. These fine pieces in sterling silver feature delicate details like tiny rock crystals, cubic zirconia and discs that can be engraved.
I love our embellished black version, but you could go for any colour.
