The Durban July weekend is renowned for it’s high fashion, bespoke outfits that have heads turning.
This Durban July, Savanna Premium Cider gave four up-and-coming designers, as well as stylist Sifiso Mahlangu, the opportunity to create innovative, spicy outfits to be modelled by the spiciest man in South Africa, Chakalaka Norris, the charismatic spokesperson for Savanna Chilled Chilli.
Chakalaka Norris exploded onto South African screens as the campaign hero for Savanna Premium Cider’s latest product innovation, the deliciously crisp and dry Savanna Chilled Chilli, containing hints of chilli and ginger.
The Savanna Chilled Chilli drink, and Chakalaka himself have since taken South African taste buds and timelines by storm, so when the opportunity to diversify the fashion showing for the weekend came up, Savanna Premium Cider made sure to show up big and spicy.
The exciting horseracing event, and accompanying parties, captivated Durban for the entire weekend. It cumulated in a fabulous fashion exhibition at Max’s Lifestyle Village on Sunday the 3rd July, hosted by choreographer, dancer, and media personality Somizi Mhlongo, where Chakalaka stole the show when he modelled the four garments.
The first garment on show and the crowd favourite was a silver soft silhouette showing, a mesh knit sequence dress with a detachable tulle organza dome, designed by Siyababa Atelier - the same iconic garment Chakalaka wore to the Durban July the previous day.
Next, Chakalaka rocked Nao Serati’s elegant four-piece blood red and honey gold suit garment with a cape to match, much to the appraisal of the evening’s host Somizi. The suit was designed with Chakalaka’s flair and flounce for life in mind. Nao and the team wanted to celebrate strength and softness with a translucent brocade fabrication and layer that over and over on itself and added a sting patch to the back pocket.
Inga Madyibi dressed Chakalaka in a deconstructed androgynous suit inspired by the anatomy of a bee, which spoke to this year’s Show Me The Honey theme. The look consists of a gold holographic sequin shirt with striking red to match the three-layered pants and a multi-coloured cropped fur jacket to finish off the look.
The final look for the evening was a suit dress from Jacques Bam of Bam Collective; Fully lined jacket with Magenta Cotton Twill and Culottes lined pants and detailed with both hand-beaded with red ostrich feathers, palettes and glass beads. The shirt that completes the look is a classic Mustard with a two-piece shirt collar hand beaded with gold glass beads and sequins.
Whenever would Savanna do a fashion show? Well, they did this Durban July incredibly inclusive and diversely. Chakalaka Norris, the spiciest man on earth, strutted his stuff on the red carpet of Durban July and entertained Savanna lovers.
It’s dry, but you can drink it.
