Let’s face it, genuine leather pieces – boots, bags, belts – are a serious investment. And after spending a small fortune on something timeless, you want it to last, well, timelessly. GLAMOUR turned to the experts at Via La Moda for advice on prolonging the life of our leather goods.
If you’re using them…
Never throw your leather pieces into the back of a car – you don’t want them rolling around collecting scuff marks.
Keep your ink as far away as possible as pen marks are most difficult to get out – and sometimes don’t fade at all!
Keep your hands clean! Sweat, cream and natural oils are infamous for darkening leather handles.
Dye from dark clothing, such as black jeans, can run so be careful of bringing them into contact with light-coloured leather shoes.
If you’re storing them…
Always keep your leather accessories in the dust bags they come in – this protects them from getting scuffed and rubbing against other items.
Keep your pieces out of direct sunlight as prolonged exposure can cause discolouration.
Stuff your bags and long boots with tissue paper (or rolled up magazines for boots) to ensure they retain their shape.
Try storing your leather pieces on shelves – squashing them in cupboards or hanging them on hooks can cause gradual wear and tear.
If they get wet…
Don’t panic if your leather suddenly turns darker! In most cases, it restores its original colour once dry.
Empty the contents of your bag, or remove your shoes, and stuff them with paper to help them keep their shape.
Place the item in a dry, well-ventilated space and leave to dry (this may take a few days, depending on how wet the item is).
Don’t put your leather in the sun or expose it to heat from hairdryers or ovens.
