2021 was the year of re-emergence. In recovering from a collective experience of anguish, gloom and constraints of the pandemic, this year was all about cherishing every moment in life. It was a year in which many people found their passion, shed their inhibitions and learned how to express themselves fully and authentically - after learning what it's like to have that right stripped away from you at a moment’s notice.
One realm in which this was most evident was fashion. From bright, bold red carpet moments, to stand-out outfits that symbolise milestone achievements, and designer collections that hold meaning and sentimental value, clothing was so much more than what met the eye this year.
With this in mind, these are some of our favourite picks for top fashion moments of 2021:
Gabrielle Union at the Fashion Awards 2021
At the Fashion Awards 2021 last month, Gabrielle Union was the star of the show. She turned heads in a neon green Valentino ballroom gown. She completed the look with a beehive top knot and Messika jewellery. If her aim was to have all eyes on her, she definitely surpassed the assignment.
Zendaya at the CFDA Awards
How can we have a best dressed list without Zendaya? The Millennial/Gen Z fashion icon continues to make waves in the industry with every red carpet she sets foot on - and the fashion gatekeepers are taking note. She recently won the CFDA Fashion Icon award and looked every inch deserving.
Rihanna and ASAP Rocky at the Met Gala
The Met Gala returned this year and the reigning queen proved she is still deserving of the title - this time however, she was accompanied by a plus-1 who drips ust as much swag as her. The blanketed pair were the coolest couple on the red carpet rocking Balenciaga and ERL.
Anok Yai at the Met Gala
Anok Yai gave us another wow moment at the Met. The model looked drop dead gorgeous in an Oscar de la Renta constellation-inspired gown.
Michaela Coel at the Emmy Awards
Another neon moment. Michaela Coel was every bit an Emmy Award winner in this bright yellow two-piece by Christopher John Rogers.
Lukhanyo Mdingi winning the LVHM Prize
In September, East London-born designer Lukhanyo Mdingi, proved once again that South Africa is indeed on the fashion map when he won the prestigious LVHM Prize. His collection is all about showcasing local artisans and communities.
Rich Mnisi at Portugal Fashion
Rich Mnisi is another local designer who’s killing it on the international stage. Earlier this year, he showcased his Mafamba Yexe collection at Portugal Fashion. The collection explores the origins of Bumba, the vomiting creation god of Congo’s Bushongo mythology - and we could not be more proud.
Thebe Magugu’s Genealogy collection
For Spring/Summer 2022, Thebe Magugu kept it in the family. The designer showcased his Genealogy collection at Paris Fashion Week, with all the looks inspired by outfits worn by his family and loved ones back in the day. We love the sentimentality of it all.
