The First Monday in May is always an exciting time. As the official day of Anna Wintour’s Met Gala, the event is guided by intricate themes that honour and celebrate iconic eras in fashion.
This year, the theme paid homage to the late and legendary designer Karl Lagerfeld, with the Costume Institute’s spring 2023 exhibition, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” which highlights the late designer’s acclaimed work at Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi, Chanel, and his eponymous label, Karl Lagerfeld.
While the theme is usually open to interpretation, and guests get creative with their fashionable ensembles, this year’s theme was approached in a literal sense.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art was a sea of black and white ensembles, and marked by Chanel’s signature use of crisp white shirts, corseted waists, simplistic designs, blazers, lace, pearls and tweed accents, quite literally bringing Karl’s vision and creations to life.
We saw custom and archival Chanel pieces on the red carpet, while designers like Schiaparelli, Balmain and Ginvenchy steered away from their distinct design aesthetic in favour of a creations that represented the couturier.
We were also treated to a splash of colour, courtesy on Kylie in Haider Ackermann and Salma Hayek in Pinault, to name a few.
