Angelina Jolie urged for an end to sexual violence during conflict as she addressed the British parliament today (08.09.15).
The ‘Maleficent’ actress – who is known for her activism work – spoke of the effect terrorist groups, who she claims use sexual violence as an “effective weapon”, were having on communities across the world.
Speaking to the House of Lords in London, she said: “The most aggressive terrorist group in the world today knows what we know, knows that it is a very effective weapon and they are using it as a centre point of their terror and their way of destroying communities and families, and attacking and dehumanising.
“This terrorist group we are dealing with in Syria and Iraq is absolutely using rape. They are dictating it as policy. This is beyond something we have seen before … they are saying, ‘You should do this, this is the way to build a society, we ask you to rape.'”
The 40-year-old actress – who is married to Hollywood star Brad Pitt – has received a number of awards for her humanitarian work including an honorary Academy Award, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, as well as honorary British damehood.
