Since announcing its new slogan “I Am What I Make Up,” CoverGirl has been making strides to show that real beauty is more than being easy, breezy. Following the addition of spokesmodels like 69-year-old Maye Musk and chef Ayesha Curry, the brand’s latest ad stars another refreshing choice: Amy Deanna. The Texan model has vitiligo, a skin condition that causes the loss of melanin, which results in patches of lighter skin.
But it isn’t just her inclusion that makes her ad for CoverGirl’s truBlend Foundation so powerful. Typically, foundation is seen as something used to cover up or even out skin tone. However, in the clip below, Deanna uses two different foundation shades—a light one and a dark one—to enhance her hypopigmentation. Essentially, the entire ad reads as a love letter to her skin.
“Vitiligo awareness is something that is very important to me,” Deanna told PeopleStyle. “Being given a platform to do so means so much. I welcome all appropriate questions about vitiligo. At the end of the day I am just like everyone else, I just happen to have spots. It’s a part of my identity, but it doesn’t define who I am … For there to be so many of us and so little representation, it’s truly disheartening. I work with CoverGirl; I’m a black woman; I have vitiligo. That is empowering.”
undefinedDespite being a first for CoverGirl’s roster, Deanna isn’t the first model with vitiligo. Winnie Harlow has paved the way for models with skin conditions since her rise to fame on America’s Next Top Model in 2014. She’s walked at New York Fashion Week and starred in campaigns for major brands such as Desigual and Diesel. Still, it’s rare to see women celebrating their skin conditions instead of trying to fix them in the beauty space. As Deanna put it: “Beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, colours, etc. Let’s face it, together we are a mosaic—that in itself is beautiful. We should celebrate that.”
