Each year, the Venice Film Festival provides an aesthetic rival to springtime’s Cannes — a second opportunity to celebrate a selection of buzzy forthcoming films with a show of equally cinematic glamour. This year’s 79th iteration was no exception, delivering a selection of sleek and stylised beauty moments that had onlookers forgetting summer’s easy air-dries in want of all things prettily polished.
For the festival’s opening fête, White Noise’s Jodie Turner-Smith played up her sparkle-strewn gown with a full lid of onyx eyeshadow and a quartet of finger waves, edged in rows of rhinestones. Tessa Thompson’s wet-look mane did not sacrifice in the texture department, a single tendril highlighting the carmine waves that fell amply down her back, kept in place with the help of an overlaid necklace. Then, jury president Julianne Moore balanced her splashy, sheer, and refractive Alaïa with a demure low ponytail bound in a black bow, cementing the hair ribbon as one of the year’s most enduring finishing touches.
And model Grace Elizabeth leaned into the gamine charm of her short lengths, parting her raven chop deeply, before gelling it immaculately in place — save for a section of bangs, which offered a femme fatale effect.
Here, the best beauty looks (so far!) from the 2022 Venice Film Festival:
