From embellished braids to accent eyes
Fashion week has kicked off in its first city, New York, before hitting fashion capitals London, Milan and Paris in the coming weeks. There's been plenty of fashion inspo of course, but the hair and makeup looks have been next-level – and, thankfully, surprisingly wearable, too.
One of the things we love most about fashion week is that it looks forward. And, as we head into the rain, drizzle and weatherproof layers of the autumn/winter season, we can enjoy a little escapism via neon bright runways, pastel cheekbones and breezy summer hairstyles.
Already we've spotted a theme of shiny optimism and throwback nostalgia. At Moschino (which moved to NY from Milan), model Taylor Hill hit the catwalk with a cot mobile, complete with colourful beads and squishy toys attached to her head.
Likewise, Gigi Hadid swapped a handbag for a giant baby bottle for an accessory that's unusual, but handy if you're feeling parched. Not quite ready to revisit your nursery years? Half of the models paid a sweet – but slightly more subtle – homage to halcyon childhoods with beaded hair braids. The other half rocked '60s bouffants paired with bright earrings and accessories.
Retro references have been a recurring theme. Alongside Moschino, Batsheva opted for Tracy Turnblad style bouffants, Ulla Johnson gave us '70s page boy bobs and Collina Strada served up grungy '80s punk rock with colourful mullets, rattails and plenty of back-combing.
Stacked hair accessories are the way pretty way to add extra interest to hair – the trend was seen at Alice & Olivia and Naeem Khan.
Smoky eyes are set to become a spring staple, having headlined at Altuzarra among other. Plus all eyes are on, well, eyes with multiple shows opting to play up the feature with fun flashes of colour.
And, if your bored of sticking to enhancing your eyes, lips and cheeks, why not give your ears, foreheads and brows a glam up with glitter and tinted mascara like the guys at Private Policy and threeASFOUR.
Here's our favourite wearable SS22 beauty trends...
Embellished braids
We love beautiful braids in all their forms – box, goddess, fishtail or french, but to next-level yours next season, it’s all about adding extra embellishment. At Bronx & Banco and Christian Siriano, models braids’ were woven with ribbon, at Moschino they were covered in colourful beads and at Collina Strada, punk-coloured hair extensions were braided through to make a statement.
Accent eyes
Lips or eyes? So far eyes have the lead (which we’re cool with since they’re secretly our favourite anyways). At Monse trad liner was switched out for a half floating liner in edgy ice blue. At Prabal Gurung models rocked cut-out eyeshadow applied to either corner of the eye. Sparkly Euphoria-inspired shadow in delicate pastel shades is here to stay, if Anna Sui has her way (here’s hoping), and at Laquan Smith, lids were studded with crystal gems. Comfy? Perhaps not. Fabulous? 100%.
Retro references
Looking into the future (next spring), one of the biggest hair looks will be channelling trends from the past. ‘60s bouffants made an appearance at Batsheva and Moschino, ‘70s bowl bobs made an appearance at Ulla Johnson and ‘80s punk is going to be major, continuing on from the growing grunge trend. Question is, which decade are you drawn to?
Stacked hair accessories
Florals for spring are undeniable but mix them up by wearing pretty blooms in your hair. The models at Naeem Khan did exactly that with single statement flowers or buds haloing buns and ponytails. At Alice & Olivia, hair stylist Justine Marjan stacked snap clips, slides and embellished scrunchies through hair to really showcase your entire hair accessories wardrobe and at Anna Sui silky patterned hair scarves made a gorgeous summer statement.
Edgy offbeat details
Let’s say you’ve conquered lips and eyes and you’re ready to experiment elsewhere – ear makeup is having a moment and our oft-neglected lobes could not be happier. At Collina Strada ears were speckled with paint and glitter (one way to show off your piercings). Brows are getting extra attention too, and not just the brushed-up kind, At threeASFOUR colourful mascaras were used to tint brows to match the model’s outfits. It’s out there, but we’re not mad. And at Private Policy glitter was scattered all over across features, which means alongside frosted cheekbones, chins and foreheads also get a look in.
Smoky for Spring
Smoky eyes may be perfect for sultry evenings, but they’re officially bang on trend for spring, too. To makeup for lost time spent barefaced, shows like Altuzarra and Alice & Olivia have declared smouldering eyes daytime appropriate. Count us in.
