Is lip gloss still relevant in 2025?

Can you believe lip gloss has been in existence for over 90 years? Yes, the first lip gloss was invented in 1930, thanks to the genius brains of Max Factor a Russian descendent who wanted a little bit of shiny on set.

The lip gloss has been in and out of the beauty industry for decades, it has never really gone away but when matte announced its arrival in 1984, shiny lips were no longer in demand. This later changed in the 90s and early 00s with the influence of certain celebrities - putting a spin on how you can apply the product.

The hype of the gloss faded until its rise on searches in 2020 which spiraled into 2021, lip glosses became a must have essential. Fast forward to 2024 when lip gloss became every girl’s best friend. So, the question remains ‘Is lip gloss still relevant in 2025?’ Yes! Absolutely no doubt about it - I have applied my lip gloss at least three times while writing this article, and that should mean something.

With every make-up or beauty brand, the product evolves with the time, the longer its on shelf the more creative manufacturers and consumers are, and that’s has been the case with lip gloss and my predictions tell me - we will see more of these creative inventions take place in 2025.

Whether you’re a beginner or intermediate student of gloss, there’s plenty of information to consume online, and one can never run out of ideas if you keep your phone closer.

Every year we are introduced to new make-up trends, while old ones mark their territory. Lip gloss will not be leaving the market any time soon, just ask some of our favourite celebrities such as SZA who back in 2021 teased a possible lip gloss line, Lia Butler who’s lips are always shiny and juicy, and Mindy Kaling who swear by her lip gloss.

Mindy was once quoted saying...“Sometimes you just have to put on lip gloss and pretend to be psyched.” If you haven’t learnt a trick or two about the power gloss, 2025 is the perfect year for you to join the gloss squad.
