Red lipstick may be a classic, but black lipstick? Now that makes a statement. It takes a certain amount of confidence to carry off such an offbeat shade, which may be why the rebel tone has attracted a legion of ballsy cool-girls who fancy a fresh and alternative update to their makeup.
But if you're wondering where this new-found popularity has come from, look to Rihanna. The singer has been one of the main driving forces behind revamping black lipstick for a new generation. In fact, serious props need to be paid to Bad Gal Ri-Ri for putting the shade back on the map.
The singer has worn the lip look countless times including at high-profile events such as album launches and red carpets. And, because she's generous, she even created a stunning jet black matte lip shade – the Fenty Stunna Lip Paint in Univited – for fans via Fenty Beauty back in 2018.
“I love black lipstick. I think it’s daring, it’s bold but there is a way that it can be really, really beautiful. It’s one of those colours that people shy away from a lot, but if you do the right balance of makeup, I think that black is such a beautiful colour," Rihanna revealed. Wise words. So much so, they've even become the theme tune to countless TikTok and Instagram tributes.
But she's not the only celeb fan. More recently Kendall Jenner rocked black lipstick for her Vogue Spain shoot back in July.
And just last week, Little Mix's Jade Thirlwall casually slayed the shade, pairing it with a hoodie, winged liner and an eye roll.
Granted it's not for the faint-hearted, but if there were ever a time to nonchalantly wear black lipstick, it's in the run up to Halloween and winter.
As for how to keep it looking fresh and modern for everyday? Keep the rest of your makeup glowy and bronzy to avoid looking like an Adams Family member. Although, 'tis the spooky season…
