Let’s face it – your scalp can take a whole lot of strain when it comes to wearing this fun style. We asked hair pro Bongani Mabunda, head of education at Henkel Beauty Care for his braiding DOs and DON’Ts.
DO“Make sure your skin isn’t pulled too taut when braids are being attached,” says Bongani. It can leave you with a thinning hairline, breaking hair and an itchy scalp!
DON’T neglect your strands. Wash your braids regularly and be sure to change them after two to four weeks to encourage new growth.
DO invest in hair oils like Amla or Moroccanoil which will help keep your scalp moisturised. “Use a moisturising oil spray daily and deep treat your scalp with hair food at least once a week,” advises Bongani.
DON’T wear them for longer than the recommended time as it can weaken your hair, preventing new hair from growing – your hair needs a two-week break before having more braids done.
