Amani Spa's Sabashni Naidoo talks spa trends and the role of spa treatments in regular self-care routine

In a busy world, setting clear boundaries between work and personal life is crucial. By dedicating time to relaxation, rejuvenation and meaningful connections, we nurture our minds, bodies and souls. Sabashni Naidoo, owner of Amani Spa & Wellness at the Radisson Collection Hotel, Waterfront, Cape Town, shares insights on the transformative benefits of integrating spa experiences into a regular self-care routine.

Why do you believe spa experiences are essential for self-care in today’s fast-paced world?

In today’s hectic and demanding environment, people often face mental health challenges, increased stress, and even burnout. Spa experiences are a powerful antidote, offering a respite from daily pressures that helps alleviate stress and foster a profound sense of well-being. This contributes to overall health and wellness, restoring balance and promoting rejuvenation.

Can you share your journey, and what inspired you to open Amani Spa & Wellness in Cape Town?

I’ve always been passionate about a holistic approach to health and wellness, making it a core part of my life. I’ve studied Ayurvedic medicine, reflexology, aromatherapy and holistic massage in my spare time. My journey into the spa industry started when my husband and I had the opportunity to stay at the Radisson Collection Hotel, which eventually led us to join the esteemed Amani Spa and Wellness franchise group.

What role does mindfulness play in spa treatments?

Mindfulness involves being fully present in the moment, paying attention to bodily sensations, scents and thoughts, all while focusing on the breath. Our spa treatments are crafted to encourage this mindful state, guiding clients to experience the calming aroma of essential oils and promoting mindful breathing as the therapist performs soothing massage strokes and stretches. While mindfulness is a key component of all our massage treatments, Amani has specifically developed the Mindful Massage Treatment to enhance the mindfulness experience. This treatment combines gentle yoga movements, mindful breathing exercises and meditation, concluding with a signature aromatherapy massage that promotes relaxation and balance.

What sets Amani Spa apart from other wellness centres in Cape Town?

Amani Spa stands out as one of the most picturesque spa destinations in the city. At the edge of the Atlantic, with iconic Table Mountain as its backdrop, it’s a serene sanctuary where luxury seamlessly meets world-class wellness. Our Wellness Journeys are meticulously curated to address our guests’ unique needs, guaranteeing a truly personalised and transformative experience.

How do you stay updated on the latest trends in spa treatments?

I keep myself at the forefront of the industry by regularly attending spa health and wellness conferences, workshops and training sessions. Supported by the innovative Amani Wellness Group, I actively engage with various spa associations and make it a priority to stay informed through extensive reading on the latest global trends and innovations in spa treatments

Why are spas more important now than ever?

In today’s digital age, many people spend countless hours typing on keyboards and staring at screens, often in sedentary positions, leading to a rise in both mental and physical health issues. Spas offer a safe and relaxing environment where individuals can unwind and rejuvenate. Spa treatments can effectively address insomnia, commonly caused by excessive screen time, and alleviate muscular tension in areas such as the back, neck, shoulders and wrists. Additionally, they help reduce headaches, improve blood circulation and stimulate the release of endorphins, which promote relaxation and significantly reduce stress levels.

How do you see the spa industry evolving, especially in South Africa?

I envision South Africa emerging as a top wellness destination for international guests. Our stunning landscapes, rich cultural tapestry and renowned hospitality make for an unmatched experience. As South Africans increasingly recognise the benefits of spa wellness journeys, I believe treatments will become integral to overall wellness routines, promoting physical and mental well-being.

How can we incorporate more self-care into our daily routine?

Start your day with a simple five-minute mindful breathing exercise to centre your mind and body. Whenever stress or anxiety arise, move your body to release tension. Remember, the quality of your life is shaped by the peace and joy you cultivate within. By nurturing your own happiness, you naturally attract positive people, experiences, and circumstances into your life.

What are your Top 3 Spas you’d love to visit, around the world?

Ananda Spa, in the Himalayas; the Mekar Ubud Jungle Spa in Bali, and the Lanserhof Sylt, in Germany.

For those new to spa wellness, what tips would you give on how to choose the right treatment?

Thoroughly review the spa menu descriptions, to understand each treatment’s benefits and focus. Then schedule a complimentary lifestyle and wellness consultation with a qualified wellness therapist to personalise your experience. Clearly communicate your areas of concern, for a tailored approach. Be mindful of your available time, as treatments range from 30 minutes to five hours! And inform your therapist about any chronic health issues, to ensure a safe and effective treatment plan.
