Funny man Dalin Oliver is a Cape Town-based comedian and sports presenter on Good Hope FM. His passion for the performing arts started back in in 2010 when he won the UCT leg of Good Hope FM’s Campus DJ Search. He tells us a bit about himself – in his own special way of course. Read on!
What would you say is your best attribute?
Putting petrol in regularly and making sure that my debit orders go off accordingly. This is adulting at its best. I’m not keen on being stuck on the side of the highway and walking to a garage to buy five litres of takeaway petrol. You’ll be living your best life until the bank phones and says the magical words, “Mr Oliver, you are behind on your payments.” Somehow I don’t feel like I’ve given you the answer you were looking for…
Who inspires you?
My parents. They are proper legends who have always supported me. If I manage to do half the job they’ve done as human beings then I’ll be happy. I’m also inspired by any working comedian who has managed to build a career in this rather cut-throat industry. It’s a tough space and anyone who finds their place in it deserves to be given credit.
What’s your idea of a perfect date?
Tinder or Pokémon Go? Only kidding. Perfect means that there’s so much pressure for everything to go according to plan. I don’t really mind what we do, as long as the lady is good company and has a personality – then we’re good to go.
What’s your favourite drink?
I’m such a child at heart. An iced coffee milkshake is always a winner. Otherwise, a Creme Soda or Steri Stumpie.
What fills the spot at the top of your dream destination list?
That’s a tough one. For now, it would be a city where there’s a booming stand-up comedy scene – even better if there’s a festival happening. Favourites would be the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal Canada, Edinburgh Fest in Scotland, Melbourne Fringe in Australia, and New York. I have a couch in two of these cities so at least I’ll save some cash on accommodation. The Rand always has me on a budget.
Do you have any regrets when it comes to past relationships?
This is a serious question. We haven’t even met. Not even an invite to go for drinks? No regrets on my side. There are one or two ladies who I should have let pay the bill though.
What’s on your playlist at the moment?
Some old school hip hop – Notorious B.I.G., Naughty by Nature, Redman and Method Man.
