Redefining friendships: Here’s why we all need at least one couch friend in our life

In a world where it gets more and more difficult to develop friendships as an adult, we all deserve a couch friend. You know, the type of friend who you can be your full, authentic self with. Where sweatpants are the official uniform, and snack-sharing and sitting in silence is a love language, we all deserve at least one couch friend in our life, and here’s why.

What is a couch friend?

A couch friend holds a special place in your heart - and couch. With this friend there are no expectations or added pressure when hanging out. They simply allow you to exist in your natural state. Much like an actual couch, couch friends provide a space where you don’t have to worry about meeting certain expectations, allowing you to emotionally and mentally recharge.

How do you know if you have a couch friend?

You’ll know you have a couch friend when your time spent with them feels easy and natural, even without making extravagant plans. In a world that often relies on constant interaction, with this friend you feel more secure and grounded. Whether you’re an introvert or extrovert, we all need time to recharge and hibernate when we feel overwhelmed by various situations, and what better way to do that than with a trusted couch friend.

To figure out which of your friends could be a couch friend, simply invite them for a hangout in the comfort of your home, or theirs. If they're up for it, you may have found yourself a couch friend. Unfortunately, not all friends are cut out to be couch friends, and that’s OK. Some friends are more cut out for big-group outings, while others prefer low-key get-togethers. Couch friendship is the type of friendship that shouldn’t be forced, but rather happen naturally.
