Women in South Africa are basically the backbone of society and our communities.
GLAMOUR: Why is it important to celebrate the women of South Africa?
Maryke De Villiers: I think there are not enough success stories known of South African women beating the odds and making their dreams come true. We live in a beautiful country which I very much love but each day we are faced with different challenges unique to South Africa BUT everyday there is a woman who rises above and makes those dreams come true. Be it financial, personal, educational or family orientated – each woman has her own definition of success and what her dreams are.
G: What inspires you to be successful?
MDV: We more often than not allow ourselves to doubt our ability to succeed, our ability to lead and our right to dream BIG dreams. We as women need to believe in ourselves and what we have to offer. Give yourself credit where credit is due!
G: What do you think is the most significant barrier to female success?
MDV: I think many females lack confidence in themselves through years of not being equivalent to men in business. Most CEOs are still male, most companies are still run by men. To break through and have confidence as a female and see yourself as just as good, is not an easy task.
G: Your biggest motivation?
MDV: My family, their commitment to me and my commitment to them.
G: What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
MDV: STAND UP for yourself!
G: What’s your message to women in business?
MDV: PERSEVERE – byt vas!!
G: Your favourite beauty moment?
MDV: My favourite beauty moment was the first time I put on red lipstick and the confidence that came with that.
