As we gear up for the summer season, with our braai stands on stand-by and our playlists lined up, will viral challenge sensations like #LevelUp and #InMyFeelings surface once again or will something new become the unofficial anthem of Summer? To get you into the spirit of summer and help you to start planning your ultimate December playlist, Spotify has some predictions to share on what you’ll most likely be listening to this season.
Looking at South African streaming trends, several local artists have consistently topped the charts and appeared on international Spotify playlists such as AKA, whose popular hit Fela in Versace, was recently featured on a Spotify’s African Heat Global Playlist. The top three most streamed SA artists since Spotify launched, broke down by ‘streamed in South Africa’ and the ‘rest of the world’, are Nasty C, AKA and Jeremy Loops. Shekhinah was at number six, making her the most streamed female South African artist. DJ Maphorisa claimed the ninth spot as the most streamed South African artist, with Fokofpolisiekar at number 10.
