For some, it is to improve health, while for others it’s to simply take a break from booze and even save a couple of rands in the process. Because let’s face it, alcohol is expensive.
You could just do it to challenge yourself or perhaps support a friend who is doing it.Regardless of the reason, for many staying sober for a month can be challenging but in the end, it’s very rewarding.
Here are some tips to help you get through Sober October successfully.
Know exactly why you’re doing it
Establish your reasons for participating in Sober October. Whether it’s to improve your mental clarity, lose weight, save money, or simply take a break from alcohol, having clear motivations can keep you focused. Write down your goals and revisit them when you feel tempted.
Look for support from loved ones
Share your intentions with friends and family.Having support from those around you not only holds you accountable but can also provide encouragement throughout the month.
Try alcohol-free alternatives
It’s become almost trendy these days to opt for non-alcoholic drinks therefore there are so many options out there. When you head out to a bar or restaurant and others are sipping on cocktails, why not opt for mocktails instead? They are just as delicious minus the booze. This way, you can still enjoy being social but without feeling deprived.
Plan ahead when it comes to social gatherings
So often we go to gatherings where booze is a major feature. Imagine going to a braai and there are no beers. Prepare in advance by thinking of strategies to stay sober at such gatherings. Consider taking your non-alcoholic drinks with you. Take a friend along who doesn’t drink either or who has joined you in the Sober October challenge.
Have a backup plan
Prepare for moments of temptation by having a plan in place. Identify triggers that may lead you to want to drink and develop coping strategies. Whether it's calling a friend, going for a walk, or distracting yourself with an activity, having options ready can be beneficial.
