There are more than 3.8 billion social media users in the world. This means that there are more than 3,79 Billion opportunities to form connections with people who could enhance your life in one way or another. The world is your digital oyster. Platforms like LinkedIn showcase the endless opportunities that are available for people who want to find employment, take advantage of international opportunities, connect with thought leaders, and build a brand or career. As simple as this may sound, building a network is not easy and it doesn't happen overnight.
Social media success, especially on professional technologies like LinkedIn need more consideration than other social media platforms. It's not just about what you do that matters, but how you conduct yourself, & what you say that will determine whether or not your target audience is interested in your profile. Here are 7 Social Media Etiquette tips that could save you from losing out on job opportunities with your future employer:
1. Always Greet. Social connections are the same as real-life connections. If you would greet a potential employer before you sell yourself, do the same online. The greeting should be formal to demonstrate respect.
2. Keep your personal life private. If you are seeking employment, you want to put your best foot forward. Don’t share pictures of your Friday night escapades of you and your friends. Rule of thumb if you wouldn’t want your parents to see it, your prospective employers don't want to see it either.
3. Your sense of Humour is not universal. If you're still building a network on social media I would recommend that you refrain from posting jokes online. Prospective employers may find your humour rude, offensive, insensitive, or off-brand. Remember your social media reach is beyond your friends & your family. You can’t expect strangers to “understand what you meant”.
4. Stay away from Negativity. Whatever you do, don't engage in fights online. The consequences of finding yourself at the heart of a negative exchange might be more detrimental to your career than you think. If a prospective employer discovers you online, the only perception they have of you is painted by your actions online. Rather engage in positive conversations & communities that show the best part of you.
5. Be Rational. Don’t use social media when you are under the influence or feeling angry. Always be sober-minded when you post.
6. Honesty is the Best Policy. Don’t misrepresent yourself by being dishonest about yourself or your achievements. Lying is the fastest way to discredit yourself online. Don’t undermine how interconnected the business world is. If you lie to one prospective employer, they will alert their network. You don’t want to be flagged as a liar.
7. Authenticity is Key. As much as you need to be mindful of how you portray yourself on social media, it's very important to maintain your true essence. There are many social media users, your only chance of truly standing out to your prospective employer is by being yourself. Nobody else can be you.
