You’ve seen it in the FROW (the front row of fashion week), on the shoulders of celebrities, in street style shots and everywhere that Vogue editor Anna Wintour strides. If you’ve felt that draping your jacket over your shoulders as a cape is too high-fashion for you, we’ve got good news: the trend is bigger than ever just in time for winter, and getting it right is simple.
Go big!
The look is stronger when you wear a long coat, whether single- or double-breasted. It really makes you look and feel like you’re wearing a cape, although it does also work well with a blazer or leather jacket.
The colour code
For a simple yet stylish look like Diane Kruger’s, make black the cornerstone of your outfit – it’s great for daytime and even better at night. For a more luxurious look, go for a white or camel coat and if you really want to make a statement, try a bright coat. For a sultry showgirl look on a night out, go for a faux fur coat – keep it sexy with a figure hugging dress, peep toe heels and dark makeup!
What goes underneath?
Well, that’s all up to you! You can wear leather skinnies or jeans, a collared shirt and sweater with ankle boots or even a tailored pants suit (Using your suit jacket as shoulder robing).
And where does my bag go?
If you’re going to be carrying a bag, it should be a clutch so that you can tuck it under your arm. Need to rock a regular handbag that looks beautiful with your outfit? Hold it by the straps at your side if the straps are short, or gather longer straps up with the bag and hold it as your would a clutch.
One last thing
Make sure that the jacket fits snugly on your shoulders, then resist the urge to hunch your shoulders to prevent it from falling off. Stand up straight and rock the look like you’re ready for the paparazzi or any street style photographer.
