The Earthshot Prize Awards 2024: A night of Glamour and sustainability

Cape Town played host to The Earthshot Prize Awards 2024 on November 6, honouring 15 exceptional finalists tackling pressing environmental challenges. The ceremony revealed 5 winners, including two African innovators. Desmond Alugnoa (Ghana), Co-Founder of Green Africa Youth Organization and Kenyan organization: Keep IT Cool.

The awards recognized outstanding achievements in protecting and restoring nature, cleaning the air, reviving oceans, building climate-resilient communities and fixing our climate.

Hosts Billy Porter and Bonang Matheba led the evening, featuring performances by Lebo M, legendary South African composer and musician, The Ndlovu Choir, renowned for their energetic harmonies, Uncle Waffles and Diamond Plutinumz.

The evening's festivities commenced with a spectacular showcase of fashion innovation on the green carpet. As the stars aligned on the green carpet, we were treated to a stunning display of fashion excellence. Local and international celebrities did not disappoint, showcasing, Indigenous outfits that celebrated cultural heritage, modern gowns that exuded elegance and intricate designs that pushed the boundaries of style.

Standout moments included, Nomzamo Mbatha's stunning yellow ball gown by Christie Browngh, featuring Colorifix technology using biological DNA pigments grown in bacteria.

Jamaican supermodel Winnie Harlow epitomized classic chic on the Earthshot Prize Awards green carpet, wearing a brown pleather dress by Luar, crafted from eco-friendly materials paired with statement silver earrings that added a touch of sophistication.

Tanzanian music sensation Diamond Platinumz made a stylish entrance as one of the night's performers, wearing a bespoke South African design that showcased his sleek, superstar demeanor, exuding confidence and charm.

South African media personality Bonang Matheba dazzled in a custom Bijila Maison gown, wearing her heart for the environment on her sleeve. The dress featured a ribbon representing water and rivers, beaded details symbolised the soil, highlighting environmental issues. A showstopping moment from the renowned red carpet icon. Co-hosting with Billy Porter, the duo delivered an impeccable award ceremony and made a stylish entrance hand-in-hand on the green carpet.

Another duo that brought the green carpet on stand still was Nomuzi Mabena and Nigeria's Ebuka Obi-Uchendu who made a stunning team on the green carpet, hosting and interviewing A-list guests. Nomuzi dazzled in a Fred Rich outfit, styled by Tracy-Lee Rosslind while Ebuka rocked a repurposed Atafo suit, accessorised with eco-friendly waste material pieces.

The Earthshot Prize serves as a powerful reminder that climate change requires immediate attention and collaborative effort. The success and recognition of all the nominees for this year’s awards proved the impact we can all play in changing our planet.
