When African women lead, The world follows

Charlot Magayi’s journey to creating Mukuru Clean Stoves began with a deeply personal motivation. When her daughter suffered severe burns from a traditional stove, Magayi was inspired to find a safer, cleaner alternative. This drive led her to develop cookstoves that significantly reduce harmful emissions, improving health and air quality. Her innovation earned her the prestigious 2022 The Earthshot Prize, bringing a £1 million grant that expanded her business to six markets, including Ghana and Nigeria.

Today, Mukuru Clean Stoves has improved the lives of over 835,000 Africans and reduced CO2 emissions by 177,000 tonnes. Magayi’s success story has positively impacted the environment and the lives of those who work for and use the product as well as inspiring other African women to rise and become leaders.

Following in Magayi’s footsteps, Manja Kargbo from Sierra Leone has made significant strides with her initiative, Freetown The Tree Town. A 2023 The Earthshot Prize finalist, Kargbo’s project tackles deforestation by engaging residents in tree planting and monitoring. Her efforts have resulted in an 80% tree survival rate, with a goal of planting one million trees by 2024. This initiative combats climate change whilst also fostering community involvement and environmental stewardship.
